Product Description
Topo U.S. 24K DVD gives access to a wider coverage area than Garmin's Topo U.S. 24k data cards. The new Topo U.S. 24K SouthWest DVD provides up-to-date detailed 24k topographic coverage for Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.Built-in DEM (digital elevation model) data supports 3-D terrain shading and route elevation profiles to help estimate terrain difficulty. With routable roads and trails in metropolitan and rural areas, getting to your destination is made easy by creating point to point routes on compatible units. In addition, you can search for points of interest by name or proximity to enhanced shoreline detail to help prepare you for your next outdoor adventure.BaseCamp allows you to plan and manage trips, routes and waypoints on both your computer and GPS. It provides the user with 2-D and 3-D map views, and animated playback of routes and tracks. BaseCamp also supports photo geotagging and allows for photo and map data transfers both to and from your GPS device.

1 out of 5 stars MISLEADING FEATURES   September 5, 2010
Mike Greeby
THIS PRODUCT, LIKE SO MANY OTHER GARMIN PRODUCTS, MISREPRESENTS THE FACTS. I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE IT WAS TO TO BE EQUIVALENT TO
USGS 24 K MAPS. IT HAS ONLT ABOUT 45% OF THOSE FEATURES.

POOR MAP COMPARED TO WHAT IS ADVERTISED

1 out of 5 stars Garmin vs DeLorme   September 2, 2010

I bought Garmin Topo Southwest. Easy to install, other than that the product is way over priced for what you get. I've been using the old Delorme Topo 3.0. Garmin just doesn't compare. I hunt in southwest Colorado, roads are miss labeled or just are just not shown. Continental Divide not shown. Major trails ie. Continental Divide Trail, Rainbow trail, Colorado trail not shown. A lot of garbage that an outdoorsman doesn't need. Who needs to know where shopping centers or an ATM are when hunting or as Garmin puts it, ON THE TRAIL? The reason for the purchase was to put a copy on my etrex Legend HCX and I wanted to print maps from my PC. Well I tried printing a map to an HP laserjet printer and it printed the Navteq logo over the map. I tried to a second printer, an HP inkjet, same thing. After an hour on hold with technical support, the technician told me Garmin is aware of the problem and I should do a print screen. Well the same thing printed. I logged into my Amazon account and sent it back.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better   July 28, 2010

It's safe to say that most GPS units are not made to be as user friendly as possible, and this software is no different. However, it isn't that difficult to use, and will help you get a lot more out of your GPS.

Having said that, it is -ridiculous- that you have to pay so much to get these maps. I got the Southwest maps because that's where I live and do most of my hiking. But I'm taking a trip to backpack in Montana soon, and it just isn't worth it to buy the separate map DVD for that trip. If these things were cheaper, I would've.

Amazon's price is much better than most others, but still very high compared to maps for GPS units from other manufacturers. I guess it's cheaper than buying lots of paper maps, but you have to do that anyway because you're crazy if you rely only on your GPS when you're in a place where navigation is a serious concern.

3 out of 5 stars Gamin 4 corners map!   July 20, 2010

A detailed map of 4 southwest states, but not the same as USGS issued maps. Some points of interest are not on there, but this is the only one that Garmin takes.

5 out of 5 stars Good for what GPS Software is for   July 9, 2010

Software is adequate! It does take awhile to load, but the maps work for what they are meant. I use it for hunting and fishing, it works great! If you are relying on software to tell you where to go in the wilderness...you probably should stay in the city! A GPS and its software are helpful and useful for marking waypoints (campsite, parking spot, good fishing holes, where you have been). This software is designed for ASSISTING in getting you out of potential bad situations and marking spots you have been. The software is not, as much as everyone wants to believe and as is advertised, for helping you find a trail. You, the outdoorsmen, should find your own friggin trail, and not rely a satellite dependent object! Buy the software for what it is meant for, accompany it with tried and true maps, a good old fashioned compass, and your senses- you will be just fine! Like I said, the software works fine, importing and exporting data are easy, install of the product takes awhile (does that really matter), and reading the maps on the unit are easy enough. If you are going to nit-pick every detail of the program you probably should never shop for anything again, because like everything else in life, the product is not perfect, but adequate.
